Marshfield, WI (OnFocus) The Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department is looking to work with the Marshfield School District and Columbus Catholic Schools to create a School to Work program.
“We have identified a need to get involved in our hiring process,” said Relief Lieutenant Erik Jonas during the Police and Fire Commission meeting on Thursday. “Regionally and nationally, the fire service and police service are having issues to get people to apply to our protective services.
“I am looking to get into Marshfield High School and Columbus High School and set up a program where the kids can come here through an application process, go through our employee recruitment system, possibly do projects through the fire department, and possibly gain college credit from MSTC or NTC for their work,” he said.
A similar program already in place through A&B Process Systems in Stratford works actively with students in welding and hires them right out of high school.
“They are hiring local kids that stay local, and that has been a problem for us here at the fire service,” said Jonas. “Once we get this established locally, this is something that we can implement and take out to the outlying communities.”
Meetings are being set up with the School District of Marshfield to start working on details for this program.
