The 2018/2019 Winter Sports Athletes of the Year are Columbus Catholic’s Bryce Fuerlinger and Colby’s Ashley Streveler. We sat down with Bryce and Ashley to recap their outstanding season’s.
The Columbus Catholic boys basketball team finished their season at the Kohl Center in Madison, WI with a second place finish in the 2019 boys state basketball tournament. The Dons were bolstered all season by a tenacious rebounding machine, also known as, Bryce Fuerlinger. During the season, Bryce pulled down an average of 13.6 rebounds per game and averaged 16.1 points per game, leading his team in both categories. By the time the state tournament had ended and the silver ball was awarded to his Dons, Bryce was also the state record holder with a staggering 34 rebounds. He also had a D-5 game record 25 in the Dons’ win on Friday, and nine more on Saturday. He broke former Wisconsin Badgers and Sheboygan Area Lutheran player Sam Dekker’s record of 29 that he set when the Crusaders won the D-5 title in 2012.
For the first time in school history, the Colby Hornets girls basketball team made a trip to the state tournament. The Hornets were led by senior, Ashley Streveler, who paced her team with 13.9 points per game and 4.0 assists per game. During the season, Ashley also topped the 1,000 point threshold, demonstrating her scoring abilities during her career. At their state semi-final game at the Resch Center in Green Bay, WI, Ashley poured in 13 points including three, three-pointers.
