D.C. Everest Cross Country and Track Standout Sara Mlodik: A Look at the Keys to her Success

  1. Key Newcomers: Freshman, Danika Spets was part of the Conference Champion girl’s middle school team, scoring in several meets last season.
  2. Conference outlook: We always work to improve. We have great coaches and great competition in our conference which will only make us better as individuals and a team.
  3. Keys to Success: Consistency is key for successful runners, whether it’s training or rest and recovery. We want to work hard in practice and remember to support that training in the other 22 hours of the day. We also need to work on remembering to run for each other when fighting for points in difficult parts of a race. It’s fun to get a PR but being part of a successful team score is next level.
  4. Behind the scenes: We have a village for this team. School staff, families, fans, and area businesses have all helped with our program goals whether it’s running a race or volunteering in the community.
  5. Coach’s Comments:
    1. We have several new athletes trying running for the first time this year, which is exciting for so many reasons. Youth sport participation has declined since the pandemic and often declines worse in females as they get older. We want this to be a program where youth feel welcome to try a sport they can be part of for a lifetime.
    2. One of our team goals is to bring people joy and confidence through running. Last year our athletes conducted trash runs to clean up the community, organized a run & play event for K-5 students, participated in a body confidence program for female athletes, and volunteered at the DC Everest Imagine event to celebrate youth running. Our annual Run & Play event will once again be held on Saturday, September 23rd for all area youth in grades K-5.
