2023 Tomahawk Hatchets Girls Swimming Season Preview
Coaching staff:
Melissa Nieman and Kurt DeKiep
Key returners:
Paige DeKiep was the state runner up in the 100 fly last season. She is returning for her senior year.
Senior Maddie List is returning and is putting in the work this season to get a personal best in her freestyle this season
Key newcomers:
We have 3 new freshmen on our team this year. Two (Kaylee Roberts and Lilly Krueger) have swam club previously and one newcomer (Kenadie Gilbert) who is learning the sport of swimming this year. I have enjoyed working with Kenadie and her excitement with every new skill makes me remember why I became a coach. Dorian Stefan (10th) was our team manager last season and wanted to get in on the action. They will be joining the team this year as a swimmer and have been such a positive light on our team.
Maggie Lashua is joining us for her senior year. She has previously swam Tomahawk Swim Club for most of her life. I am excited to be her coach again!
Conference outlook:
Right now, as a team, we are focusing on building endurance, setting goals, and identifying improvement targets.  We want to keep our focus on improve vs “prove”.
Keys to your success this season:

Keys to success for the Tomahawk Hatchets this season is quality training and mental toughness. Swimming can be demanding and really push these athletes to their limits. We are working as a team and one-on-one to develop strategies to get the team through the struggles of being a student athlete and building new strengths.

Behind the scenes: Who are some of the people that help your program succeed?

We couldn’t be the team we are without the wonderful support of our parents. They find the time to get the athletes to practice, plan snacks for the bus, team feeds, and time at our meets. They really are the glue that keeps us together. Another big thank you to our Athletic Director, Ryan Flynn, who finds the time in the crazy fall sports season to pop in and check on us and how we are doing. That may be a small gesture to some, but as a coach knowing someone is looking out for you and your team it means so much.
