Green Bay (OnFocus) – The Aaron Rodgers saga looks to be an onoing process that has no definite end result, but this week, a possible twist could make things interesting.
“Aaron Rodgers Elects to Sit out the 2021 Season, Keeps his Salary” could be a headline we see soon.
The NFL Players Association has negotiated the rights for players to opt out of the 2021 season, due to any lingering concerns regarding the pandemic. Even though it’s highly unlikely that anyone will actually do it, it is possible.
Last year, only 67 players opted out. This time around, however, there are conditions that have to be met for players to opt out, and Rodgers qualifies:
- current contract must have been signed before October 1, 2020
- players that opted out last year
- or… players that developed a high-risk condition since October 1
Could Rodgers have a high risk condition? Who knows…
If Rodgers opts out, he would retain the $11.5 million proration of his signing bonus as well as a $6.8 million roster bonus paid in March. He risks forfeiting that $18.3 million if he instead holds out from training camp, which starts in late July.
The deadline for making a decision is July 2, and once a player opts out, he’s out for the season. Period. Nothing can change that decision.
Stay tuned.
