Abbotsford (OnFocus) – The Abbotsford Falcons and Crivitz Wolverines squared off in Level 1 action Friday night, and on paper, it appeared the teams were a close match. Turns out that was accurate. Abbotsford blocked a Crivitz field goal with just over two minutes remaining that would have tied the game, and the Falcons sealed the win with a touchdown shortly thereafter, gaining the 26-15 win.

Trailing 18-15 with 7 minutes remaining, Crivitz went on a drive that had the makings of a  march to the end zone and a lead for the visitors. The Wolverines converted on a 4th and 1 with six and a half minutes left, using their grinding running game.  When the Wolverines lined up for the game tyying field goal from 30 yards out, the game’s balance was in doubt.

The kick never made it past the line of scrimmage as senior Brandon Hawkey used his tall frame to knock the ball down. Right there to pick it up and run was junior Brandon Diedrich, who returned it out to the Falcons’ 45 yard line.

The Falcons then  set out to preserve the lead and run the clock down, but Crivitz had a pair of time outs left to use. Needing a big play to secure the win, the Falcons’ offensive line came through, opening up a hole for senior running back Ty Falteisek to get through and scamper 54 yards for a touchdown. Following quarterback JV Castillo’s two point conversion to Diedrich, Abby led 26-15 and the win was all but guaranteed.

The Falcons took a 12-7 halftime lead on touchdown runs by Falteisek(18 yards) and sophomore Evan Reis (3 yards).

Abbotsford pushed their lead to 18-7 in the third quarter, only to see Crivitz get to within three with a 10 yard touchdown and two point conversion.

Falteisek led all rushers with 190 yards on 16 carries.

Castillo added 85 yards on 16 carries.

Abbotsford outrushed Crivitz 334 to 264.
