NFL’s greatest ever players – AI joins the debate

  • New study asked ChatGPT to select an offensive starting line-up of the best ever NFL players
  • Joe Montana is chosen at quarterback, ahead of seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady
  • Jerry Rice is included – twice – as both a wide receiver and tight end

A new study has revealed the NFL’s ultimate starting line-up of the greatest ever offensive players, according to AI.

The research by onlinecasinos.com, which helps players find the best online casinos worldwide, asked ChatGPT to select the line-up and include reasons for its choices. After first choosing only ten players in its line-up, this was the generative AI’s response:

  1. Quarterback: Joe Montana – Montana is widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. He won four Super Bowl championships with the San Francisco 49ers and was known for his accuracy, poise, and ability to perform under pressure.
  2. Running Back: Jim Brown – Brown is considered one of the most dominant running backs in NFL history. He led the league in rushing yards eight times in his nine-year career and was a three-time NFL MVP.
  3. Wide Receiver: Jerry Rice – Rice is often regarded as the greatest wide receiver of all time. He holds numerous NFL records, including most career receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown receptions. Rice won three Super Bowl rings during his career.
  4. Wide Receiver: Randy Moss – Moss was a game-changing receiver known for his incredible speed and ability to stretch the field. He holds the single-season record for touchdown receptions and was a six-time Pro Bowl selection.
  5. Tight End: Jerry Rice (dual-role) – In this lineup, Rice plays a dual role as both a wide receiver and a tight end due to his versatility and exceptional skills.
  6. Offensive Tackle: Anthony Munoz – Munoz is widely regarded as one of the greatest offensive tackles in NFL history. He was a three-time NFL Offensive Lineman of the Year and a member of the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team.
  7. Offensive Tackle: Jonathan Ogden – Ogden was a dominant offensive tackle during his career with the Baltimore Ravens. He was a 11-time Pro Bowl selection and an excellent pass protector.
  8. Guard: John Hannah – Hannah was known for his toughness and was considered one of the best offensive linemen of his era. He was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and an NFL MVP as a lineman, a rare achievement.
  9. Guard: Larry Allen – Allen was a powerful and versatile offensive lineman who excelled in both run blocking and pass protection. He was a 11-time Pro Bowl selection and a Super Bowl champion.
  10. Center: Jim Otto – Otto was an ironman at the center position, playing in 210 consecutive games. He was a 12-time All-AFL/NFL selection and a pioneer in his position.
  11. Fullback: Jim Brown (dual-role as a running back) – In this lineup, Jim Brown also plays a dual role as a fullback due to his versatility and incredible talent as a ball carrier.

ChatGPT prefaced its selection by noting that “Selecting the starting lineup for the greatest ever NFL players is a subjective task, as opinions on the greatest players can vary widely depending on individual preferences and eras. However, I can provide a list of some of the most commonly mentioned players in NFL history based on their legendary careers and impact on the game. Keep in mind that this list is not exhaustive, and there are many other deserving players as well.”

Commenting on the study, a spokesperson for onlinecasinos.com said: “Fans love to debate which players are the greatest of all time, so it’s fascinating to see how an artificial intelligence approaches the task. The line-up includes plenty of legends, and some potentially faulty information, such as claiming that John Hannah was named NFL MVP. And although ChatGPT is keen to highlight that ‘opinions may vary, and there are many other deserving players in NFL history as well’, it offers a strong hint as to which individual player it would select as the greatest of all time, because its line-up includes Jerry Rice twice, as both a wide receiver and a tight end.”
