CENTRAL WI, WI (OnFocus) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has issued an Air Quality Advisory for PM2.5, effective until 10:00 AM CDT Monday morning (UPDATE: Extended to 12AM Tuesday). The advisory comes as the first round of Canadian wildfire smoke for 2024 is observed in Minnesota and far northwest Wisconsin.

Residents can anticipate a decline in air quality as the smoke plume moves into the state behind a cold front. PM2.5 concentrations are expected to remain elevated through Sunday afternoon and evening, particularly across northwest Wisconsin. The smoke is projected to continue its southeastward trajectory behind the cold front into Monday morning, eventually impacting the entire state.

As a result, Moderate to Unhealthy levels of PM2.5 Air Quality Index (AQI) concentrations are anticipated on Monday, before transitioning back to Moderate to Good AQI later in the day and into Tuesday. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will reassess the situation on Monday morning and update the current Air Quality Advisory accordingly.

Given the potential for PM2.5 levels to reach unhealthy levels, individuals with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children are advised to avoid prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors. For others, it’s recommended to reduce prolonged or heavy exertion to minimize exposure to harmful pollutants.
