Marshfield (OnFocus) – On Thursday, July 9, according to police reports, the defendant, a 31 year-old Marshfield male, was traveling southbound on Veterans Parkway when he left the roadway at the Peach Avenue overpass causing a collision with multiple wooden barricade poles, and a light pole.

One witness reported seeing the vehicle traveling at a speed of approximately 80 MPH while another witness reported seeing the vehicle traveling at 60-80 MPH immediately before the crash in the posted 35 MPH zone.

Inside the vehicle, an open bottle of fireball cinnamon whiskey was observed on the passenger seat and a small amount of alcohol was missing with the seal broken. The defendant was transported to Marshfield medical Center where the defendant consented to the HGN exam. Due to the severity of high injuries, no other exams were performed.

A PBT sample (breathalyzer) collected indicated a level of .223. Hetzel stated he had arrived home from work approximately 1.5 hours prior to the incident and consumed approximately three 8 oz glasses of bourbon on ice. He briefly passed out and awoke believing it was the next morning and that he was late for work.

He stated he was driving on Veterans Parkway and lost control due to possible hydroplaning. A blood draw was mailed to the State lab. This is the defendant’s second DUI, with the first being in July of 2010. He is scheduled to appear in court on September 10, 2020.
