MADISON, WI (OnFocus) – The Aquinas Bluejays used a stellar outing from sophomore quarterback Jackson Flottmeyer to take the school’s first football state title since 2007 over the Mayville Cardinals, 28-26.
The Bluejays jumped out to a 16-point lead in the opening quarter as Flottmeyer connected with Quinn Miskowski for the opening score and Joe Penchi found the endzone for the second touchdown of the quarter.
Mayville fought back and scored 20 unanswered points throughout the second and third quarters. The game of runs continued as Flottmeyer found Miskowski for a second time and Calvin Hargrove ran in a score to help Aquinas grab a 28-20 lead with 11:47 to play in the game.
Aquinas got the ball back and Mayville forced a fumble with 9:47 to play in the game. The Cardinals proceeded to drive 88 yards and scored with 1:41 to play in the game. They needed the two-point conversion to tie the game and workhorse running back Blake Schraufnagel was stood up by three Aquinas defenders at the goal line.
Aquinas’ goal line stand gave the Bluejays a 28-26 victory and their second gold ball.
Flottmeyer led the Bluejays with 282 yards passing, two touchdowns and one interception. Schraufnagel rushed 38 times (one away from a state championship game record) for 205 yards and two touchdowns.
