Armed Standoff in Wisconsin Rapids: Knuesel Arrested, Investigation Ongoing

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (OnFocus) – During the week of April 8, 2024, the City of Wisconsin Rapids Police Department received a report of an individual entering a home and holding two individuals at gunpoint for several hours while demanding property. The suspect was identified as Austin J. Knuesel (Age: 36). Knuesel discharged one round into the ceiling during the incident. It was reported that Knuesel was in possession of a sawed-off shotgun and made threats to return and harm everyone in the house if his demands were not met.

On April 13, 2024, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Knuesel’s location and executed a search warrant at his residence on CTH D in the Town of Sigel, Wood County, Wisconsin. Knuesel was arrested without incident, and a sawed-off shotgun was found inside his residence, along with a large quantity of suspected marijuana.

On April 15, 2024, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department executed a search warrant related to the shooting in the City of Wisconsin Rapids. Evidence of the shooting was recovered, and four individuals were taken into custody after a brief standoff. The incident occurred on or near 8th Ave South in the City of Wisconsin Rapids, resulting in a significant police presence, including the deployment of the Wood County Sheriff’s Department’s armored vehicle. All four individuals were taken into custody on charges unrelated to the shooting.

At the time of Knuesel’s arrest on April 13, 2024, he was out on bond for Child Sexual Assault, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and drug-related charges. Knuesel is currently being held at the Wood County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond.

The Wisconsin Rapids Police Department assisted the Wood County Sheriff’s Department during both search warrants.

This incident remains under investigation, and limited information can be released at this time. Fortunately, no individuals were injured during the shooting incident or during the apprehension of the suspects. The citizens of Wood County can feel safer knowing that Austin Knuesel is in custody.
