Assumption Soccer Edges Northland Pines

Northland Pines 2 Assumption 3

Three years later and we are having a rematch from the sectional final.  Game started out back and forth but about 9 minutes in the ball gets behind our defender and our freshman center back makes an aggressive tackle in the box and the ref determines it’s a pk. Assumptions forward blast the ball over keeping the game tied at 0.  Assumption has more speed in both the forwards and defense than we did and it became apparent when 5 took one touch exploding behind our right back and our keeper stayed on the line not challenging the ball carrier and punched it in the back of the net. Assumption up 1-0. Our girls stayed composed and kept fighting and the effort paid off as we moved Senior Zoe Anderson to the striker position and two minutes into the substitution she makes a right to.left run beating three defenders puts a shot on net and followers her own shot for a left footed goal.  A lack of focus by our defense and keeper allowed number five to get behind us once again scoring with just two ticks on the clock. S cond half assumption had a strong wind at their back and they came out playing long ball after long ball and 5 took a nice touch and found her third goal.  After that goal they went into a defensive shell and we took over the game putting attack after attack with a number of  balls laying uncontested in the goal mouth but not crossing the goal line.  After a number of attacks we were able to earn a corner and Grace Plank served a nice cross and Zoe Anderson leaped taking the ball off her chest deflecting to an attacking Kaydence Brost squeaking just past the fingers of the assumption keeper.  Pines 2 Assumption 3.  We had momentum and were consistently attacking and on the 71 minute a perfectly slotted through ball from Ava Gaetano found streaking Zoe Anderson who was taken down in the box eerily similar to the pk penalty in the early minutes of the game but the ref saw it as no foul and the game played on.  We mounted a number of late attacks and truly believe if we had another 5- 10 minutes we.coupd have notched it up or pulled of the win.  It was a gritty game and we were still moving girls around trying to find what clicks.  I like their ability to step out of their comfort zone and just work hard.  This is what we have been looking for. Even though it was a loss I think the girls stepped up!
