Athens (OnFocus) – Longtime Cloverwood foes squared off as the calendar turned to October, and the Athens Blue Jays’ 42 point first half outburst propelled Athens to a resounding 56-8 win over Thorp.
Cooper Diedrich gave Athens the lead for good when he scored from 20 yards out just three minutes into the game.
Four and a half minutes later, the Athens signal caller connected with Dayne Diethelm for a 68 yards score, giving Athens all the points it would need.

The Blue Jays scored four more times in the first half, with Diethelm(2 yards) and Jake Denzine(47 and 33 yard runs) and Diedrich(53 yards) gave Athens a 42-8 halftime lead.
Diedrich led all rushers with 122 yards on 10 carries. Denzine ran for 105 yards on 7 carries.
Diethelm added 2 receptions for 92 yards to pair up with his two scores.
Cobie Ellenbecker came up big for Athens with 2 interceptions for 40 yards.
Athens outpaced Thorp on the ground, 355 yards to 92. The Blue Jays piled up 430 total yards in the win.
