Auburndale baseball drops home game to Athens

AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale baseball team finished its regular-season schedule with a 7-1 loss to Marawood Conference North Division champion Athens in a nonconference game Tuesday at Auburndale High School.

The Apaches were held to five hits and their only run came on a Colton Wright home run in the fourth inning.

Athens busted open a scoreless game with two runs in the fourth. After Wright’s homer, the Bluejays (14-3) scored three times in the fifth and added two more in the sixth to pull away.

Cooper Weinfurter took the loss for Auburndale (7-9), allowing five runs in 4 2/3 innings. He finished with four strikeouts and two walks.

Auburndale will play a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal at Spencer on Thursday at 5 p.m.
