AUBURNDALE – Cooper Weinfurter poured in 26 points to lead the Auburndale boys basketball team to a 79-65 victory over Wausau Newman Catholic in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday night at Auburndale High School.
Auburndale led by five points at halftime before closing out the win with a 49-point second half.
The Apaches made 17 of 26 free throws while Newman made just 8 of 16.
Colton Wright added 19 points and Dylan Paun chipped in 13 for Auburndale.
Charlie McCarty had 21 points for the Cardinals, who made 13 3-pointers in the loss.
Auburndale hosts Athens in a nonconference game Friday at 7:15 p.m. The game will be livestreamed at zaleskisportsshow.com.
