PORT EDWARDS – The Auburndale girls basketball team found itself in a fight on opening night of the 2018-19 season and was able to find a way to come out of top.
Natalie Aue scored 16 points, and Marissa Ponshock had 15 points and 13 rebounds, to lead the Apaches to a 54-50 victory on Tuesday night at Port Edwards High School.
Auburndale led 26-20 at halftime and were able to hold on at the end, making just enough free throws.
The Apaches missed 19 of 42 attempts at the free-throw line, but were able to outscore Port Edwards 23-15 at the line in a game marred by 44 combined fouls. Aue was 6-for-6 to lead the charge for Auburndale.
Taylor Stanton added 12 points, eight coming at the free-throw line, for Auburndale.

Auburndale opens its Marawood Conference South Division schedule Thursday night at home against Wausau Newman Catholic.
