MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – Wildwood Park officials have confirmed that avian influenza is the cause of recent geese deaths in the park. (None of the geese are zoo residents, but are wild geese. None found on zoo grounds have been found deceased.) After consulting with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and local authorities, officials have determined that there is minimal risk to the zoo animals and the public at this time.

“We have confirmation of an avian influenza strain consistent with the HPAI circulating in wild birds from wild geese submitted from a pond at the zoo. At this time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers the human health risk to the U.S. public from HPAI A(H5N1) viruses to be low,” stated Nancy K. Businga, Wildlife Disease Specialist/Health Lab Manager – WM/Fish, Wildlife and Parks at Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

The public is generally advised to avoid contact with sick wildlife or wildlife that are found dead of unknown causes. If carcasses must be handled, it is recommended to wear gloves and wash hands with soap and water after handling.

The public can report a sick or dead wild bird via this survey form: Sick or Dead Bird Reporting Form. They can also contact the Wildlife Switchboard to report a sick or dead wild mammal or wild bird by emailing [email protected] or calling 608-267-0866.

The Marshfield Fire Department will assist with the removal of the deceased geese as part of ice rescue training for their staff. However, the exact date and time for this cleanup effort have not yet been determined.

Park officials are monitoring the situation closely and remain in contact with relevant agencies to ensure the safety of all visitors and wildlife. Community members with additional questions are encouraged to reach out for more information.
