The Abbotsford Falcons held off Gilman in nonconference volleyball, winning in four sets, 26-24, 19-25, 25-22 qne 25-21.
Abbotsford raced out to a 16-6 lead, only to see Gilman come right back, with seniors Grace Tallier and Tatum Weir leading an 11 point run that put Gilman ahead, 17-16. The Falcons prevailed down the stretch, however, claiming the first set.
The second set was tied at 19 before Weir spearheaded a charge of 6 points and Gilman’s 25-19 had fans expecting a battle till the end, and they got it.
The third set was a back and forth affair that saw Weir lead Gilman at the net and at the service line, but the Falcons prevailed with a Haylee Soyk kill giving Abbotsford a 25-22 win.
Needing a win in set #4, Gilman played with a sense of urgency and with Tallier and Weir’s efforts, Gilman held a 21-17 lead following a Tallier kill.
The Falcons then stopped the Pirates and didn’t let up. After Abbotsford earned a point to get the serve, junior Sydney Falteisek stepped to the service line. It turned out she never rotated past, as the Falcons reeled off eight straight.
With seniors Tallier and Weir leading Gilman’s charge all evening, it was time for an Abbotsford senior to take center stage, and Soyk was prepared.
Soyk, who led the Falcons with 17 kills, 6 blocks and 12 digs, came up with her biggest kill of the evening, sealing the win with a shot to end the match.
