Baked or Fried? Meet Amherst Falcons Girls Soccer Coach Bill Spees
We take a look at Amherst Falcons Baseball Head Coach Bill Spees, with our world-famous interview: Baked or Fried? Read on to learn more about Spees behind the scenes…
OnFocus: What sports did you play in high school?
Spees: Football, Wrestling, Golf
OnFocus: How do amateur sports benefit students, parents, and the community?
Spees: Students who participate in sports have greater personal confidence and self-esteem. They learn how to work and interact on a team, for a common goal. For the community it is a positive outlet for kids to spend their free time and promotes stronger bonds within the community to support their local youth/school teams.
OnFocus: How have you been involved in sports in your adult life?
Spees:I have participated in recreational leagues since graduating from college (basketball, softball, volleyball, golf). Began coaching youth sports when the kids became old enough to join teams (football, soccer).
OnFocus: What do you enjoy about your involvement in athletics?
Spees: I enjoy watching others improve and accomplish things they didn’t think they could. I enjoy competing as an athlete and a coach. Many “wins” happen even when the scoreboard is not in your favor.
OnFocus: If there could only be one concession food in the world, what would you want it to be?
Spees: Walking Tacos
OnFocus: What would you do with the money if you won 10 millions dollars in the lottery?
Spees: Set up a foundation for a youth camp where kids with special needs could ride horses and fly fish for trout.
OnFocus: Is there something most people don’t know about you?
Spees: I am an avid musician.
OnFocus: What job did you want when you were growing up?
Spees: Prosecuting attorney.
OnFocus: What do you most enjoy watching on television?
Spees: Baseball games.
OnFocus: How do amateur sports benefit students, parents, and the community?
Spees: See above
OnFocus: Who was an influential coach that has made a difference in your life?
Spees: The best coach I ever had was my baseball coach sophomore year. He got me into all of the nuances of the game and taught me how to throw many pitches.
OnFocus: How do you unwind and enjoy your free time?
Spees: Fly fishing with my family – Sara (wife of 26 years) and Matt (age 22) and Andrew (20).
OnFocus: What would be an appropriate Super Hero nickname for you, and what would your powers be?
Spees: Still searching for a super power!
OnFocus: Who are your favorite athletes?
Spees: Henry Aaron, Ray Nitschke, Oscar Robertson, Alex Bregman, Francisco Lindor, Sal Perez
OnFocus: Who is your role model(s)
Spees: My grandpa. He worked hard and loved his family.
OnFocus: Baked or Fried? If you could pick only one, which would it be?
Spees: Baked – Peach pies are usually baked!
