Champions in Three Divisions Crowned at State Boys Golf Tournament
KOHLER, Wis. – Three teams and three individuals were crowned champions at the 2023 State Boys Golf Championships at Blackwolf Run.
Sheboygan North led the tournament from the start and won the Division 1 team championship with a four-player, 36-hole score of 614 for the two-day tournament. Last year’s champion Eau Claire Memorial came within three strokes of the lead on Day 2, but finished runner-up with a score of 622.
Senior Parker Etzel of Eau Claire Memorial won the individual medalist honor in Division 1. He shot 3-over-par with a 36-hole total of 147 for the tourney after tying for seventh last year. Junior KC Nickel of Waunakee was runner up with a 5-over-par 149. Senior Mason Schmidtke of Sheboygan North, junior Jackson Piacsek of Waukesha North and junior Aiden Cudney of Kimberly tied for third at 150.
Edgewood won its sixth straight Division 2 team championship, not including the canceled 2020 season due to COVID-19. No other program has won more than four consecutive titles. The Crusaders recorded a cumulative four-player score 615, which is 23 strokes fewer than runner-up Winneconne with 638.
Senior Winston Knobloch of Winneconne was the Division 2 medalist for the second year in a row, shooting a 3-over-par 147. Senior Alex Weiss of Edgewood was three strokes back in second place with a 36-hole total of 150 following a sixth-place finish in 2022. Edgewood teammate, senior Zeke Boos, and senior Brant Bauman of Peshtigo tied for third at 151.
Cambridge won the Division 3 team championship after finishing runner-up a year ago. The Blue Jays compiled a four-player score of 657. Mineral Point finished runner-up, 29 strokes back of the leader with a 686.
Sophomore Kian Bystol-Flores led throughout much the tournament and won the Division 3 gold medal with a 6-over-par, 36-hole score of 153 after tying for 13th last year. Senior Spencer Lynch of St. Mary Catholic finished second with a score of 155 after tying for fifth last season, and senior Nick Buckman of Cambridge, who tied for 10th in 2022, was third with a score of 156.
