Marshfield, WI (OnFocus) The Common Council approved the 2020 budget and a three percent tax increase on Nov. 26.

The tax rate increase is from 9.26 percent to 9.54 percent per $100,000 in assessed property value, which means the taxpayer will pay $954. In October, the council had approved a three percent instead of a two percent increase to take steps toward a budget shortfall.

No citizen comments made during the public hearing regarding the budget.

Finance Director Ron Aumann said the tax rate is comparable to other entities. “Based on preliminary numbers, it looks like our increase of three percent is going to come in under both counties, well under the tech, and slightly above the school levy.”

The 2020 budget includes a one percent pay increase for employees and a 3-mile asphalt paving plan at $1.982 million.

“Anything less than four miles is really not keeping up, but it’s trying to do the best we can with the monies we have,” said City Administrator Steve Barg.

Approval of the budget and tax increase passed 8-2 with alderpersons Rebecca Spiros and Adam Fischer voting no.
