MARSHFIELD – Marshfield Columbus Catholic scored eight times in the second inning and took advantage of five Port Edwards errors to win 12-2 in a WIAA Division 4 baseball regional quarterfinal on Thursday at Jack Hackman Field.
The Dons led 2-1 after one inning before the big second inning that effectively secured the outcome.
Columbus Catholic scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game via the 10-run rule.
Columbus Catholic (7-10) moves on to a Division 4 regional semifinal at No. 1 seed Greenwood (16-2) on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Greenwood, the Cloverbelt Conference East Division champion, beat Columbus Catholic in its only meeting during the regular season.
Will Schalfke earned the win for the Dons, allowing just three hits in the five-inning complete game. He struck out two and walked three.
Bryce Fuerlinger went 3-for-4 with a double and scored twice, Jarred Mandel was three hits, including a double, scored three times and drove in two, and Cole Noreen had three singles and three RBIs for the Dons.
