Who: Columbus Catholic (23-2) vs Assumption (20-5)
Where: Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School
When: Thursday, March 8 at 7pm
What: Division 5 Sectional Semi-Final
SPORTSDESK – A rematch between the Cloverbelt East champion Columbus Catholic Dons and the Assumption Royals, hailing from the powerful Marawood South, will take place in the Division 5 sectional semi-final game on Thursday. The Royals took down the Dons, 58-43, the day after Thanksgiving back on November 24th. Before the turkey truly had a chance to become leftovers, the Dons saw the Royals outscore them by nine in the first half and then best them by six in the second. In that game, the Royals were led, as they have been all year, by 6’6” senior, Joe Grundhoffer. Grundhoffer scored 16 in the post-tryptophan game and then went on to average over 18 points per game on the season.
If the #1 seed Dons are to move past the #2 seed Royals in this game, they will need their scoring leaders Nick Malovhr (19.6ppg) and Jarred Mandel (12.1ppg) to continue their post-season hot shooting against the Assumption defense. The Dons will also need to repeat their scoring balance from the regional final vs Wild Rose where they saw five scorers in double figures. Another factor in this game could be fan support. The Dons faithful will need to traverse the 35 miles from Columbus Catholic high school to Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln high. The Royal faithful need only travel 1.4 miles, as they share their home city of Wisconsin Rapids with their public-school neighbors to the east.
