Waupun – The Columbus Dons soccer team finished third at the 15th annual Crusader Kick-off Classic Saturday with a 3-1 win over the hosting Central Wisconsin Christian, a day after losing to Waupun 5-0 in the semi-final game.
Columbus was outshot 31-7 in the semi-final game against Waupun. Goalkeeper Kellen Heinzen was credited with 10 saves in the loss.
The Dons fared much better in the third-place game, outshooting CWC 22-6 in the win.
Zach Olson scored the opening goal for Columbus on an assist from Nadim Torbey during the 29th minute to give the Dons the early lead.
Dylan Porter scored an unassisted goal for the Dons during the 38th minute to extend the lead. During the 54th minute, Torbey scored a goal on an assist from Olson to help seal the win for the Dons.
Heinzen recorded three saves for Columbus and surrendered just one goal.
The win improves the Dons record to 2-1 this season.
Columbus begins conference play Monday, Aug. 27, with a home game against Northland Lutheran. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
