A tradition with the D.C. Everest Girls Cross Country Team continued with another successful event, and what started after a workout has not extended into the Evergreens giving back to the community in a non-typical way.

Picking up trash.

¨This tradition started on a Saturday workout at the track after Homecoming. There was trash and candy everywhere from the game and parade. A few athletes started picking up pieces before the entire team joined in to lighten the load for our custodians. Eventually we turned it into a run,” shared DCE Girls Head  Coach Alisha Blanchette.

On Wednesday, the Evergreen girls headed out with bags and gloves to pick up as much trash as they could in 40 minutes, a concept called ṕlogging.´

Junior, Duaja Yang said, “You would be surprised by how much trash is lying out in the community.”
Freshman, Mikayla Loveless said, “Even small pieces can add up and create a lot of waste.”
Coach Allisha Blanchette said, “Running these streets, we probably notice it more than most but that also gives us an opportunity to do something about it.”
Freshman, Danika Spets said, “I enjoyed running to clean the environment making it more friendly to animals, plants, and people alike.”
Junior, Krista Via said, “It’s a great way to help out the community we run in. Anyone can do it; you can walk or bike too.”
