D.C. Everest’s Sara Mlodik has excelled in cross country and track, collecting a state title in cross country, state track meet podium finishes, and a prestigious honor of finishing 15th at the Champs National Cross Country Championships in December.

We caught up with Mlodik for our world-famous interview series, to learn about the star student-athlete, an inside look.

Pancakes or Waffles?

OnFocus: What are your favorite subjects/classes and why?

Mlodik: Math because there are always answers and all you have to do is use formulas/equations to get there. Plus, it is easy to listen to good music while answering questions which makes it more fun.  Science because it makes sense of the world and how it works while learning hands-on.

OnFocus: Who is/was your first favorite teacher and why?

Mlodik: Mr. Wendorf because his class was my first main science class and is when I realized how much I enjoy learning about the world around me.

OnFocus: What is the most unusual food you have eaten?

Mlodik:  Cheddar mealworms in 6th grade science class

OnFocus: What is your favorite music to listen to?

Mlodik:  Taylor Swift music

OnFocus:  What are your plans after high school?

Mlodik:  I plan on running at a D1 college in the central/north central US and earning a degree in engineering.

OnFocus: What sports do you play?

Mlodik:  Cross Country and Track & Field

OnFocus: Which teammate would you not want to be stranded with on a deserted island?

Mlodik:  Maria Selting, because she would definitely insist on making surfboards to surf the waves instead of finding help for us 🙂

OnFocus:  What are some memorable moments you have had as an athlete?

Mlodik: Winning state and seeing my parents, coaches, teammates, and friends by the finish line, all ecstatic.

OnFocus:  Who are your favorite athletes and/or teams?

Mlodik:  Sydney McLaughlin

OnFocus: What do you enjoy most about competing in front of family, friends and fans?

Mlodik: I most enjoy being able to recognize their voices cheering among all the other people during races.

OnFocus:  Do you have a funny or unusual moment(s) you have experienced in sports?

Mlodik: Back when I was in gymnastics, I was doing a switch-leap on the beam in a competition and I landed wrong and fell off the beam, literally rolling off onto the mat. Then I got back up to finish the routine knowing the judges just saw me totally embarrass myself.

OnFocus: What’s the best thing about being a student-athlete at D.C. Everest?

Mlodik: They way athletes get the times and locations of competitions said on announcements and shown on TV screens so the student body can see the variety of athletics they could spectate and support.

OnFocus:  What words of wisdom can you give to other student-athletes?

Mlodik: Stay focused on your goals (academically & athletically) and have fun along the way. Also, get a great calendar because being organized can reduce stress and let you make time for the things you enjoy!

OnFocus: Lastly, pancakes or waffles?

Mlodik:  Waffles! (with whipped cream and sprinkles of course!)
