Pittsville FFA Alumni Dairy Breakfast Charges Just 96 Cents
A meal that’s only 96 cents seems too good to be true, but that’s exactly how much an upcoming dairy breakfast will charge per person on Saturday, June 16.
It’s all to raise awareness of the current agriculture economy, in which the average farmer receives just 16% of every dollar spent in stores and restaurants on the commodities they produce. “It’s to raise awareness of how much profit there actually is and how much goes back to the farmers working seven days a week,” said Josh Calaway, FFA Alumni president.
The Farmer Cost Share Breakfast will be hosted by the Lippert Family at Grass Ridge Farm LLC as part of the Pittsville FFA Alumni 35th annual June Dairy Breakfast, also celebrating 100 years of Lippert family farming tradition in the Pittsville community.
Six years ago, the Alumni hosted a similar breakfast at Mitch and Colleen Perkl’s farm and served 1,400 people in just four hours, educating all on the reality of the farmer. “Eyebrows got lifted,” said Calaway. “They thought it was cool to see it and understand it.”
While the sight of a giant tracker working the field might give the illusion of wealth, the reality is different, he added. Current challenges facing farmers include a poor dairy market, and breakfasts like these help make the public more aware of the struggles.
The Cost Share breakfast is made possible through the generosity of the community and area businesses. The event will take place from 7-11 a.m on Saturday, June 16. Freewill donations are accepted to offset costs.
On the menu is pancakes, potato pancakes, sausage, ham & eggs, cranberry bread, ice cream, cheese, cranberry juice, and milk. Kid-friendly crafts and games are put on by Pleasant Corners 4-H. The address is 5882 County Rd E Pittsville, 54466 with handicap accessible parking.
