Detroit Lions fans most likely to buy a fake NFL jersey this Christmas

  • New analysis of Google search data has revealed which NFL fans are searching for fake jerseys the most this Christmas

  • Fake Detroit Lions jerseys are the most sought-after in the NFL, with over 10,000 monthly searches since September

  • There has been a 158% increase in demand for fake NFL jerseys in the build-up to Christmas

A new study has revealed the most popular fake NFL jerseys, and it’s bad news for Detroit Lions fans who may need to double-check if their jersey is authentic this Christmas.

The research from FlashPicks, a betting picks, parlays, predictions, and news brand, analyzed Google search data for all 32 NFL teams, taking into account a range of fake jersey search terms in 2024, to reveal which NFL fans are most likely to buy a counterfeit jersey.

The US has seen a 158% increase in the number of searches for fake NFL jerseys since September 2024, with fans of all teams making a combined 87,260 searches per month, compared with an average of 33,700 monthly searches made between January and August, as Americans look for cheaper alternatives to save money on Christmas presents this year.

The study reveals that Detroit Lions fans are searching for fake jerseys more than any other NFL fanbase in the run-up to Christmas.

An official men’s and women’s Detroit Lions home jersey will cost fans $129.99, whereas counterfeit versions can be purchased online for as little as $12 from some Chinese-owned online traders. However, fans may have to snap up knock-offs quickly as President elect-Trump has threatened to increase United States tariffs to 60% on imports from China.

Lions fans have searched for fake jerseys a hefty 10,020 times on average each month since September – a 278.1% increase from the monthly average of 2,650 searches made in the rest of the year, showing just how popular fake jerseys are likely to be this Christmas.

The full study reveals that the second most popular fake NFL jersey in the US this Christmas is a Denver Broncos jersey, as 9,200 average searches each month have been made since September. Counterfeit Broncos jerseys have become incredibly popular in the lead-up to Christmas, as the average searches each month has increased by a whopping 486% since September – the biggest increase of all NFL jerseys.

Fake New York Giants jerseys are the third most popular in the US this Christmas, as fans online have made 5,290 searches for a dodgy Giants jersey – a 164.5% increase in searches since September compared to the rest of 2024.

Miami Dolphins jerseys were found to be the fourth most popular fakes among NFL fans, with an average of 5,190 searches each month from September to December for counterfeit Dolphins jerseys.

The fifth most popular fake NFL jersey this Christmas is a San Francisco 49ers jersey, with an average of 4,880 searches each month in the lead-up to Christmas. That makes up for a 241.3% increase in searches since September compared to the rest of the year.

Las Vegas Raiders jerseys are the sixth most popular knock-off jerseys in the NFL this Christmas, with an average of 4,640 searches each month since September. While Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns jerseys are tied for seventh place, as both jerseys receive an average of 4,510 searches.

A Green Bay Packers jersey is the ninth most sought-after fake jersey this Christmas, with 3,820 searches made each month since September – an increase of 310.8% compared to the rest of the year.

Atlanta Falcons jerseys complete the top 10, with an average of 3,060 searches made each month since September for a fake Falcons jersey.

Commenting on the research, Callum Broxton, Head of Operations at FlashPicks said: “The rising cost of NFL jerseys is pricing more and more fans out of being able to afford them, and leading them to sites that sell counterfeits that are much more affordable.

“It’s important that anyone purchasing cheap jerseys online is wary of scams that could see them give important details away or leave them out of pocket. We hope that teams across the US take note of these alarming figures and try to make memorabilia more affordable in the future to help supporters not turn to counterfeit merchandise.”
