Pet Supplies Plus Shares Tips

MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – Loving our dogs comes naturally. However, when it comes to proper grooming and cleaning, it can be a bit of a learning curve for many new dog owners. Questions like “how often should I bathe my dog?” are met with a wide variety of responses. (Pro Tip: Pet Supplies Plus offers professional grooming and a pet wash you can try yourself.)

While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, finding the right bathing routine for your pup doesn’t have to be complicated. To help make things simple, we’ve created this guide to help you determine the right amount of wash, rinse and repeat needed to keep your dog C.L.E.A.N:

C– Coat Type
L– Lifestyle
E– Environment
A– Allergies and Skin Conditions
N– Nose Test

Coat

Different breeds have different needs, and so do their coats. Dogs with shorter coats can typically be bathed every one to three months, while medium-long coats require more frequent bathing— every four to six weeks is a good rule of thumb.

However, when it comes to their coats, length isn’t the only thing to consider — texture matters too. For dogs with smooth coats, like pugs or greyhounds bathing is only recommended three to four times per year. Rougher, more bristly coats, like that of a Scottish terrier or Brussels Griffon, require more frequent bathing and upkeep. And for dogs with wavy coats, like a poodle or a Komondor, bathing frequency depends on the breed. When in doubt, consult with your vet or a grooming specialist to determine the right bathing routine for your dog’s coat type.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle and activity level are also important in determining how often you should wash your dog. If your dog is active and loves to spend time playing outside and rolling around in who-knows-what, you will need to bathe them more often. However, if your pup is more of a nap-enthusiast and likes spending their days laying on the couch or snoozing in the sun, you can stick to your regular bathing routine.

Environment

Environment plays a big role in how often you should wash your dog. If you live in the city, chances are your dog isn’t getting too dirty on your daily walks. However, for country-dwelling dogs, their curiosity might lead them into some pretty sticky (or muddy) situations, resulting in the need for a good scrub down.

Environmental elements can also increase the risks of fleas and ticks, so checking your dog frequently and bathing accordingly is important for their overall health.

Allergies (And Skin Conditions)

Some dogs have allergies or sensitive skin conditions that affect how often they should be bathed. From fungal or bacterial infections to allergies and dry skin, the frequency that you bathe your dog (and what type of shampoo you use) will depend on the nature of their condition.

To find out how and when to wash your dog to keep their skin healthy, consult your veterinarian.

Nose Test

When all else fails, trust your nose. If you aren’t sure if your pup needs a bath, brace yourself, lean in and take a big whiff. This method is pretty good at detecting whether or not your dog needs a trip to the tub.

By considering these five variables, you can help keep your pup looking, feeling — and of course, smelling their best.
