MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – Since the Holiday Season of 2020, Marshfield Medical Center’s Home Delivered Meals Program has been delivering Christmas bags to its recipients. This year marks the fifth anniversary of this heartwarming tradition.

The Program’s Start

The initiative began during the pandemic when recipients were receiving their meals, but interactions with volunteers, family, and friends were severely limited. Many recipients were in dire need of a “little spark” to lift their spirits during the holidays.

To address this need, the Silver Sparks program was born, thanks to the creativity of Home Delivered Meals Coordinator Kris Hughes, along with dedicated volunteers and generous donors.

“I received many calls from families stating that their parents or loved ones in the Home Delivered Meals program were isolated at home due to the pandemic. They had no opportunity to see visitors as we approached the holidays. Their loved ones were saddened by being alone and quarantined in their homes. It was a scary time for them,” Hughes shared.

Sparking Happiness

So, how could they “spark” some joy beyond delivering holiday meal trays to their doors?

Previously, meal recipients had enjoyed receiving occasional tray favors throughout the year. Silver Sparks expanded on this concept on a much larger scale. More than 150 individuals benefited from donated items such as mittens, socks, hot cocoa mix, candies, ornaments, Sudoku books, and decks of cards — simple yet meaningful gifts to “warm their hearts.” These items were beautifully wrapped in festive gift bags and delivered along with meals, bringing cheer to those undergoing dialysis and individuals in Respite Care.

The Program’s Success

“The initiative was a huge success,” Hughes recalled, “thanks to the many people who donated items.” Silver Sparks quickly evolved into a community-wide effort.

“The project took on a life of its own,” Hughes said. “We received unbelievable donations. Silver Sparks did what it was meant to do — it touched so many hearts.”

How to Donate

Collection boxes will be available in the Marshfield Medical Center cafeteria until December 13. Additional donation boxes are located at the Marshfield United Way Office and the Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
