MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – The Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department was dispatched for a general fire alarm at 105 East 3rd Street on Sunday, August 20 at 9:15am.

Two engines, and one ambulance with a total of nine personnel responded to the scene as well as Marshfield Police Department. Upon arrival, black smoke was seen coming through an opening in the brick wall on 3rd street under 253 S. Central Avenue. The building houses War Room Museum & Collectibles.

“These structures are very difficult to fight because of their age and configuration. They have a high probability of risk,” said Deputy Fire Chief Troy Weiland.

A box alarm was requested, which called in all available off-duty personnel, Hewitt Fire Department, Central RIT, Marshfield Utilities and We Energies. Eleven off-duty personnel responded to the station: five of those personnel responded to the scene and provided assistance. The remaining personnel were covering ambulance calls.

An offensive attack was used to find the fire. The second-floor apartments above the fire building were evacuated.

Upon entry crews were met with a large amount of black smoke with zero visibility. Crews made entry to the basement and through the use of a thermal imaging camera were able to find the fire in the zero visibility and extinguish it. The structure was ventilated to remove smoke and carbon monoxide. Crews were on scene for several hours to systematically ventilate all of the adjoining structures.

No injuries were reported from this incident. The origin of the fire is in the basement. The cause remains under investigation. The scene was cleared at 16:45.
