Drive Safe This Valentine’s Day: Essential Tips to Avoid Accidents
Traffic safety data from NTSHA reports that Valentine’s Day sees a 4% increase in the likelihood of fatal car accidents compared to an average day.
There’s something far more dangerous on Valentine’s Day than forgetting a gift or making dinner reservations: drinking and driving.
Personal injury expert John Foy & Associates says,
“Valentine’s Day is a time of year when we share appreciation for that special person.
“However, as more people are likely to be out driving to restaurants, movie theaters, or other venues for dates and celebrations, this can cause an increase in traffic.
“In addition, delivery services, especially for flowers and gifts, may also contribute to higher traffic volumes.
“Couples who are out celebrating will often drink alcohol, and the risk of impaired driving can rise. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect reaction times and decision-making.
“Therefore, if you do plan to drink, use a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare service. For those driving, plan your route and allow extra time to reach your destination.”
To enhance safety on Valentine’s Day, consider the following tips:
- Avoid distractions: Refrain from using your phone or engaging in activities that divert your attention while driving.
- Drive with caution: Maintain a safe following distance and be prepared for unexpected actions from other drivers.
- Never drive under the influence: If you plan to consume alcohol, arrange for alternative transportation or designate a sober driver.
- Stay vigilant: Stay alert for other drivers who may be impaired or driving recklessly.
