MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – As Easter Sunday approaches and households begin decorating with spring blooms, veterinarians are urging pet owners to be aware of a serious seasonal danger: lilies are highly toxic to cats.

Even small exposures to lilies—such as licking pollen, drinking water from a vase, or nibbling on a petal or leaf—can lead to acute kidney failure in felines. The most dangerous types include Easter lilies, tiger lilies, Asiatic lilies, and daylilies.

“Lilies are among the most dangerous plants for cats. Even small exposures can cause kidney failure,” says Dr. Renee Schmid, DVM, DABT, DABVT, senior veterinary toxicologist at Pet Poison Helpline .

Symptoms of lily poisoning in cats can appear within a few hours and include vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, and dehydration. Without immediate treatment, the damage can be irreversible and fatal.

Veterinarians strongly recommend avoiding lilies altogether in homes with cats. Safe alternatives for festive floral arrangements include roses, orchids, or daisies.

If you suspect your cat has been exposed to lilies, contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal poison control center immediately.
