It was a rough night for the first home meet of the season as the antigo Red Robin’s tennis team faced off against conference foe Medford.

“I thought we would have presented more of a challenge to the Red raiders, but Medford has a strong lineup that should be able to challenge for the conference championship,” explained Antigo Head Coach David Zalewski.

It was another sunny breezy day for tennis and though antigo  could not secure any victories in the varsity flights, a large crowd was treated to some competitive play.

Antigo again forfeited the doubles and played four singles. Nolan bunnell found himself across the net from a very familiar foe, bradyn balciar, an opponent he has played several times over the last few years. But bunnell has yet to find the key to defeating balsiar’s pushing style of play.

Michael hagerty played some very good tennis in a losing effort at number three singles. He and his Medford opponent Dante axon, played toe to toe but hagerty came up on the short end.
Freshman Garrett Tomyzck had the most competitive set of the evening almost winning the first set against Connor klingbid, 4-6, but dropped the next set 1-6.
At two singles, Landon Nelson found himself against a very strong Saskatoon Damon and though he played well, he found himself on the losing end of both sets.
The Red robins had more success in the exhibition matches. Ezra Braun pushed his opponent Jude Stark to three sets, 7-6, 1-6, 3-6.
Wyatt Beaber of antigo also went the distance against Oliver swantek and came out the victor by winning the third set tiebreaker 10 to 7, after splitting sets 6-4, 1-6.
Cliff mauk, another antigo freshman, did an excellent job defeating Jason brandner in both sets, 6-1,6-3.
“I wasn’t disappointed with this loss. All the boys played competitively, had good attitudes, and kept fighting to the very end,” Zalewski explained.
Next up for the red robins is an away match next Tuesday at Lakeland high School.
