OnFocus – The Edgar Wildcats defeated the Hurley Northstars in the WIAA sectional semi-final on Thursday by a final score of 54-36.
Edgar will go on to face Clear Lake in the sectional final on Saturday in Edgar at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Out of the gate, Edgar used a flurry of shots behind the arc to open up an 11-2 scoring run. In the first six minutes of the game, Austin Dahlke had two three-point shots and Kyle Brewster matched Dahlke’s total with two threes of his own.
The Wildcats held Hurley without a field goal for the first 7:40 of the game. Over the next three minutes of the game, Hurley would battle back as second-chance shots would allow them to go on a 9-0 run to bring the score to 14-11 in favor of Edgar with 8:30 to play in the first half.
Dominic Croci single-handedly brought the Northstars back as he drilled three-straight three-pointers to give Hurley their first lead of the game with two minutes to play at 20-18.
A driving layup attempt with six seconds remaining in the first half resulted in a foul and two shots for Drew Guden which knotted the game at 20 at halftime.
Coming out of the break, Guden splashed a three to get the momentum rolling back in the Wildcats favor. The ensuing 7-0 run over the next three minutes would catapult Edgar to a 27-20 lead.
Hurley would slowly work their way back to a 2-point deficit with 4:40 to play in the game. Guden wouldn’t let the Northstars complete the comeback as he splashed his fourth 3-pointer of the game and Brewster hit a transition layup on the ensuing possession to open up a seven point lead with 3:47 to play.
From there, Edgar went on a run and eventually opened up an 18-point lead to advance to the sectional final game.
Dominic Croci led Hurley with 11 points and Eli Talsma scored eight. For Edgar, Guden ended the contest with 24 points and Brewster and Dahlke had 13 and 11 points, respectively.
