CLARK COUNTY, WI (OnFocus) – On March 8, 2024, a collision on State Highway 95 (STH 95) near County Trunk Highway J (CTH J) in the Township of Dewhurst, Wisconsin, resulted in the loss of nine lives. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office, working alongside the Wisconsin State Patrol, responded to the scene promptly, closing off STH 95 to conduct an investigation.
Chief Deputy James Hirsch initially provided minimal details, refraining from releasing names or specifics out of respect for the families involved and ongoing investigation. The public was advised to avoid the area due to the severity of the incident.
Later updates revealed that a semi-truck traveling eastbound on STH 95 collided with a van heading north on CTH J at the intersection. Emergency responders remained on site as the investigation unfolded, leading to the closure of the affected highways.
By evening, the crash site was cleared, and the highways reopened. However, the toll was devastating: eight occupants of the van, including the driver, and the semi-truck driver lost their lives. One van passenger was hospitalized for injuries.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene with the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Hatfield Fire and Rescue Department, the Neillsville Area Ambulance, the Clark County Highway Department and the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
The investigation is still ongoing.
