When Marshfield Area Pet Shelter published a Facebook post about needing more litter, little did they imagine the enthusiastic response from the community.
Currently hosting over sixty cats and kittens, the pet shelter goes through plenty of litter to care for them. Donations came from a variety of generous community members, including Ordinance Officer Bob Larsen, who brought in four large containers that were put to immediate use. An online campaign raised $520.
Festival Foods store manager John LaFlash saw MAPS’s post and contacted the pet shelter to claim over $1,000 worth of supplies. “Festival Foods contacted us on a Saturday, and by Tuesday they called to say we could pick up the donations. We never thought it would be TWO truckloads!” said Karen Rau, MAPS president.
The supplies included over 40 buckets of litters, stacks of paper towel, canned cat & dog food and containers of Lysol/Clorox wipes. To store all the donations, the pet shelter lines its hallways and stacks as many as possible in the garage.
Support from individuals and local businesses is greatly appreciated. “When we started MAPS seven years ago this month, we hoped people would rally around our cause because it was a service that was desperately needed in our community,” said Rau. “For every year that passes, we are reminded how important our work is and how appreciated we are by the community through generous donations like this from Festival Foods and their customers.”
MAPS is working toward building a permanent shelter and is currently housed in the old airport terminal on W. 29th while operating an Adoption Center inside Marshfield Mall. Visit www.marshfieldpetshelter.org for more info and to donate.
