WOOD COUNTY, WI (OnFocus) – A retired City of Marshfield employee, Susan Carlson, was sentenced March 6 in Wood County Circuit Court for stealing from the City of Marshfield during her time as clerk.

Susan B. Carlson, formerly employed as a court clerk in Marshfield, Wisconsin, faced a series of charges related to embezzlement dating back to January 1, 2016. The charges, delineated in eight counts, included theft in a business setting exceeding $10,000, as well as failure to file income tax returns. The severity of the offenses ranged from felony G to misdemeanor U.

After extensive legal proceedings, Carlson appeared in court on March 6, 2024, for her plea and sentencing hearing before Wood County Circuit Judge Nicholas J. Brazeau Jr. Present in court were Carlson, her defense attorney Damon Paul Stichert, and prosecuting attorney Matthew Steven McElroy.

During the hearing, Carlson entered a plea of no contest to the charges against her. Count 1 resulted in a deferred agreement, under which Carlson would avoid further charges if she refrained from criminal activity and made restitution payments. Counts 2 and 3 were dismissed and read-in, while counts 4 through 8 resulted in guilty pleas.

Judge Brazeau found Carlson’s plea to be voluntary and found her guilty on the charges. Sentencing proceedings ensued, during which Stichert and McElroy presented arguments, and Carlson made statements.

The court sentenced Carlson to five months in the county jail, with the option for work release, as a condition of her probation for count 4. Additionally, she was placed on probation for three years and ordered to pay restitution totaling $180,390.07, along with costs amounting to $2,215.00.

Notably, Carlson’s legal journey was marked by various procedural events, including multiple pre-trial hearings, motions, and status conferences. The case underwent several amendments and adjustments, reflecting the evolving nature of the legal process.
