Fugitive Sex Offender Arrested in Illinois After Months on the Run

WAUSHARA COUNTY, WI (OnFocus) – On January 16th, 2025, at approximately 10:00am the Waushara County Sheriff’s Office was notified that David Ryan Thurber was taken into custody during the execution of a search warrant in Danville, Illinois on his Department of Corrections and Waushara County felony warrants. Through the course of several months of investigation it was determined that David had fled the State of Wisconsin and was living in the State of Illinois under an alias name. At the time of his arrest David was in possession of methamphetamines and cell phones contrary to his sex offender registry.

On October 5th, 2024, the Waushara County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections about a registered sex offender identified as David Ryan Thurber. Department of Corrections GPS Monitoring Staff explained that they received a tamper alert for David’s GPS device. They believed that the device had been cut off and removed from the person of David Thurber. Department of Corrections asked for law enforcement to respond to an address on Tri County Road in rural northeast Waushara County. Upon arrival at that address David Thurber’s ankle worn GPS monitoring device was in a field near the residence. The ankle worn device had been cut off the person of David Thurber. The property at that location was searched but David was not located.

The Waushara County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in this investigation by the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office, Weyauwega Police Department, Wautoma Police Department, Danville Police Department, Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office, and the US Marshal’s Service.
