Get Healthy and Get Back to Your Life: Thyroid Care

Dr. Michael Ruscio, CEO of Dr. Ruscio’s, DC Clinic and The Ruscio Institute for Functional Health, offers simple tips for maintaining thyroid health.

40% of people are on thyroid medication they don’t need. That’s a substantial number.
Part of why this happens is the inaccurate interpretation of thyroid symptoms.
If you have or suspect you have a thyroid issue, it’s important to know which signals, especially when combined, are actually worthy of concern and which are less so. So, let’s look at four warning signs of thyroid issues and why they happen to best understand why they’re reliable indicators.

1. Fatigue

Why does this happen? Thyroid hormone is, in part, responsible for your metabolic rate. So when your thyroid has a problem, it can slow the metabolic rate, meaning less conversion of your food into energy.

2. Dry skin
Why does this happen? Thyroid hormone stimulates the production of keratin (a term you’ve likely seen on beauty products). Keratin is an important protein that helps your body retain moisture. With less thyroid hormone comes less keratin, meaning drier skin.
3. Hair loss
Why does this happen? Keratin is the key player in this issue as well. Keratin’s role in moisture retention is important for hair growth and health.
4. Mood swings
Why does this happen? An inconsistent metabolism doesn’t just matter for fatigue, it can also impact your brain’s ability to metabolize serotonin and dopamine (important neurotransmitters).
Of equal importance is knowing the popular warning signs that are not reliable. I think you’ll be surprised to hear what these are. (They are some of the most commonly repeated!)
So let’s continue this important conversation on today’s episode of Dr Ruscio Radio where I’ll lay out important risk factors, dispel common misconceptions, and give you six more reliable warning signs to look for.
