MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – The Governor WH Upham House will be closed for tours January and February of 2023.

The office will retain regular operating hours which are as follows

  • Mondays 9 am to 1 pm.
  • Wednesday 10 am to 1 pm.
  • Thursdays 9 am to 1 pm.

“The Upham House needs critical repairs to maintain its historic majesty after a colony of honeybees, with no particular respect for historic buildings, moved in and caused extensive damage between the clapboards and the inner wall,” the group stated on Facebook.

The outer wall was repaired last summer, and the honeybees excluded. However, due to the vast amount of rain last spring, water had seeped in between clapboards and into a window casement.

The rainwater, along with honey from the combs ran into the library room. This caused considerable damage to the existing wallpaper as well as the window – all of which will need to be repaired.

The Board of Directors have chosen these months to close for repairs because January and February are the slowest times for this historic house museum.

If you or anyone you know desire to help preserve history and contribute to the community, the estimated costs for repairs, wallpapering and labor will come between $4,000 – $5,000. However, the cost of maintaining a piece of Marshfield’s history is priceless.

History preserving contributions can be made via PayPal or via a check made out and mailed to: NWCHS PO Box 142 Marshfield, WI 54449.

“We are thrilled and excited to reopen in March and as always, we are eternally grateful for our community. The Board of Directors wishes to thank all of you for your continued support,” they stated.
