Students Presented Research at Conference in Chicago
Marshfield High School’s SMART Team, focusing on molecular biosciences, presented their research at the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Experiment Biology Conference in Chicago.
The SMART (Students Modeling a Research Topic) team worked with a mentor to research the structure and function of a protein significant in their research.
They modeled the protein based on the crystal structure and then the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Center for Molecular Modeling prints the 3-D model of the protein the students design. The final phase of their project included developing a poster and presenting to other researchers.
This year, students explored the envelope protein of Zika Virus as a target for antiviral treatment. The team also studied the origin and spread of the outbreak as well as current research on methods for combating the spread of Zika.
Junior Ayush Shukla stated, “SMART teams allows me to apply and expand the science I learn in the classroom. I can understand how science can transform society.”
The 2017 SMART team consists of Haania Khan (Grade 11), Roma Shaw (Grade 11), Ayush Shukla (Grade 11), and Kyle Schultz (Grade 10). The team is coached by Ms. Amy Fassler, Science Teacher at Marshfield High School.
