OnFocus – Wood County’s “Keep the Forest Green” campaign concluded this year with 15 forest fires reported. This program runs each year from late March until the end of May and aims to educate the community on the importance of safe burn practices.
“This year was exceptionally busy with minimal rain and low humidity’s and higher winds – all these always lead to a busy fire suppression season,” Pittsville Fire Company reported.
With nine fires, the number one cause of fires this year was debris burning – highlighting the need for awareness of safe burning conditions and practices. Other causes included improper ash disposal (2), experimenting with fire (1), fail to extinguish (1), railroad (1), and equipment (1).
