Land O’Lakes of Spencer has donated $10,000 toward the K9 program, a significant jump toward the Spencer Police Department’s goal to bring its first K9 unit to the community.
The program is set to start next summer with Patrol Officer Mindy Stellmach as handler. Stellmach will train 4-6 weeks, working directly with the dog and getting familiar with each other.
The K9 will help curb the trend of drugs in the area. “That’s a real concern to us. We want to take care of the problem and keep our community safe,” said Police Chief Shawn Bauer.
The $60,000 the department is hoping to raise will buy a kennel-equipped squad car, the dog, and fund officer training. About $51,000 has been raised.
A street dance called “Kick Loose for a K9” is being held Sept. 28 starting 5 p.m. in Spencer until 11 p.m. on with a performance by Boogie and the Yo-yo’z. Proceeds will go toward the program.
