KAUKAUNA – Mason Coffren kicked an 18-yard field goal as time expired as the Marshfield football team pulled out a 24-21 victory over Kaukauna in a Valley Football Association crossover game Friday night at Kaukauna High School.
The Tigers improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the VFA West with the victory, while Kaukauna drops to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the VFA North.
Marshfield took over on its final possession at the Kaukauna 11 after an 8-yard punt with just more than 2 minutes remaining in the game.
The Tigers got a first down on the 1, but were stymied on three-straight rushing attempts trying to get into the end zone. After a timeout with 1 second left, Coffren drilled the short field goal to give Marshfield the victory.
Brant Bohman had a 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to put Marshfield up 7-0 and that held until halftime as the Tigers turned away Kaukauna twice inside the 5-yard line.
Kaukauna quarterback Noah Van Asten tossed a pair of touchdown passes – 47 yards to Mason Van Zeeland late in the third quarter and 15 yards to Taylor Tschantz early in the fourth – to put the Ghosts on top 14-7.
Each team went back-and-forth after that.
Isaac Meverden hauled in a short pass from Ryan Krueger and ran 69 yards for a touchdown to tie the game for Marshfield, but Kaukauna responded quickly as Van Asten hit Van Zeeland again for a 6-yard score as the Ghosts regained the lead.
Marshfield drove down to tie the game again as Meverden caught a 32-yard TD pass from Krueger.
Marshfield stuffed Kaukauna on three plays following the kickoff and gained the great field position after the short punt to set up the winning field goal.
Marshfield hosts Stevens Point (0-4, 0-3 VFA West) next Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. at Beell Stadium. The game will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and wdlbwosq.com, and video live-streamed on focusonmarshfield.com.
