Library Will Host Discussion on Nina Revoyr’s “Wingshooters”

Marshfield (OnFocus) – The Everett Roehl Marshfield Public Library has moved its discussion of Wingshooters by Nina Revoyr to Wednesday, July 8th. The free event will be held over Zoom and participants must register online using this URL (click here).

Wingshooters is a novel that follows the story of Michelle LeBeau, the child of a white American father and a Japanese mother as she grows up in Deerhorn, Wisconsin. Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and the post-Civil Rights era, Deerhorn’s primarily white community is rattled when a black couple moves in.

Bethany Pierson, Program and Volunteer Coordinator for the Everett Roehl Marshfield Public Library notes the book was chosen, “due to its focus on the discussion of racism in a rural Wisconsin setting since it would be relatable to our community and open doors for reflection and discussion.”

The book discussion will be lead by UW-Stevens Point (Marshfield Campus) English professor Julie Tharp. She will guide the dialogue with thoughts and questions to spark discussion around the themes of racism in a rural Wisconsin setting.

Pierson encourages participants to bring their own questions and insights as well.

“The more voices and differing perspectives that are brought to the discussion, the more productive and moving the discussion will be for participants,” she said.

The discourse is slated to be about an hour and a half long depending on the number of participants and how deep the conversation goes. Pierson encourages teenagers and adults to join the meeting.

She noted, “The book is decidedly geared towards adult audiences, but it is very similar in its content to…books highlighted in high school curriculums such as To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and should be accessible to teen readers as well.”
