MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – Marshfield Monarchs held a special butterfly release Wednesday to honor Makenna and all victims of the Uvalde school shooting. Nineteen children and two adults were killed in the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde County on May 24.
“We were contacted from a lady in Texas who is friends with the grandmother of one of the little girls shot and killed in the Uvalde school shooting,” said Melissa Gwiazda, founder of Marshfield Monarchs. “She wanted to do something nice for her friend to honor her granddaughter, Makenna, who loved butterflies. She asked us to do a special release in memory of Makenna and all her friends and teachers.”
After a short speech by Gwiazda, dozens of monarch butterflies were released beneath posters bearing the names of the victims.
“It is an honor for us that we were asked to do this,” she said.
Gwiazda and her family rescue and raise monarch butterflies in an effort to help the endangered species once again flourish. To date, the nonprofit has released more than 10,000 butterflies. Follow them on Facebook at Marshfield Monarchs.
