MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – ProVision Partners Cooperative works with farmers to help their herd get the best possible nutrition for best possible outcomes. In recent years, robots have become more prevalent in agriculture. Milking and feeding cows with robots can have several benefits, as Jason Berdan, a Livestock Production Specialist for ProVision Partners, explained.

“Robots can automate the milking process, ensuring that cows receive a consistent and accurate amount of feed at the right times based on their stage and level of production. This can lead to more efficient use of feed. They can also reduce labor costs associated with traditional group TMR feeding,” he explained. “Automated milking systems can be customized to meet the unique needs of different cows or groups of cows, allowing for greater flexibility in milking and feeding schedules and the use of different feed types.”

Utilizing robots can also improve herd health. The robots are there 24/7 and when cows can access the milking robot and have access to supplement on their own schedule (without the need for a human handler), this can lead to improved behavior and better overall welfare.

Another benefit is enhanced data collection.

“Technology can read which cow is in the robot at which time it will release the right food at the right time for each cow. It will identify her number, how much feed she needs, her milk production, etc. That allows our producers to tailor that need without her getting fat,” said Berdan. “The sensors and software can collect data on feed intake and cow behavior. This information can be used to optimize feed rations and detect early signs of health issues, leading to improved herd management.”

Feeding cows with robots can offer several benefits, and paired with quality feed is a powerful tool for farmers.

“The forage quality has to be there,” said Berdan. “We still want to make sure we have those basic needs met. We can have the greatest feed technology in the world, but if we don’t have those fundamentals done correctly (bad forage or inadequate amounts, for example), it won’t matter. We work with you to make sure that’s correct all the way through.”
