MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – On December 15, 2023, a Marshfield woman contacted dispatch to advise that she received a phone call that she was in trouble and needed to pay $5,050. As instructed by the scammer, she deposited the money into a Bitcoin Machine. After depositing the money, the woman realized that this was a scam. Police are investigating.

Some scammers exploit the fact that Bitcoin transactions are irreversible. They may conduct transactions with unsuspecting users, receive payment in cash, and then reverse the transaction or use stolen funds. This leaves the victim without their cash or Bitcoin.

Scams like this serve as a reminder to be cautious about unsolicited phone calls, emails, or messages. Scammers often use these methods to target potential victims. Be wary and don’t provide personal information or make financial decisions based on such contacts.
