National Telecommunications Week Celebrates Public Safety Answering Points
MARATHON COUNTY, WI (OnFocus) – National Public Safety Telecommunications Week is held this year from April 10 to 16. This week is dedicated to those persons who are working in our Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) receiving 911 Emergency and the other non-emergency calls for services related to EMS, Fire and Law Enforcement.
From Marathon County Sheriff Scott Parks: They are the persons who diligently work causing the resources needed to respond as required to the scenes. It can be quite stressful on occasion in our PSAPs, while at the same time, extremely rewarding when the resulting efforts are a life saved or another victim protected.
Many of our PSAPs are facing a new struggle. The struggle is similar to those being experienced in the private world and that is finding the qualified people necessary to effectively meet the needs of the community we serve. It is an excellent profession and one valued by those who work within and outside of our area emergency services. I would encourage persons interested to learn more.
Which brings us to another key component of this week and that is recognizing one of our staff as the Marathon County Public Safety Telecommunicator of the Year. This year that person is Julie Hillman. Julie started with us on September 9, 2002. At one point, Julie was assigned to the shift I led as a Patrol Lieutenant, so although I was Julie’s supervisor and occasionally aided her in her communications officer role, there were many times when I was working on patrol that Julie could tell me where to go and how quick I needed to get there.
One of the benefits of being a Communications Officer is you can direct your supervisor what to do, when to do it and the need to do it now just by keying the microphone and dispatching the call for service. Julie represents us extremely well and has definitely earned this recognition. In addition, this year Julie will celebrate 20 years with the Sheriff’s Office. Congratulations Julie!
